This is one of Aylesbury’s many lost pubs, the Hen and Chickens.
This old pub was located on the corner of Oxford Road and White Hill (now Friarage Road and Oxford Road).
It’s so confusing when road names are changed!
This was photographed in about 1962 after some neighbouring cottages to the left of the pub were demolished to make way for the widening of White Hill.
At the time, Gatehouse Road and the roundabout were being completed. This quaint old building was demolished in 1965, along with a row of cottages between there and Castle Street.
This was to allow for Friarage Road to be constructed.
A new pub was built further back from the original spot and was called the Hen and Chickens up until the 1990’s when it changed to Big Hand Mo’s.
When that closed the building was left unoccupied for a while and eventually it was replaced with some apartments.
