Aylesbury Prison has been told that it needs to improve in the latest figures from the Ministry of Justice.

A prison annual performance ratings report, by the National Offender Management service found that the young offenders institute was ‘of concern’ and that efforts need to be made to improve.

Aylesbury was one of 28 prisons which scored a second lowest score of 2 on the 1-4 scale, these included Wormwood Scrubs and Pentonville, which have also been singled out for criticism.

But the Ministry of Justice stepped in to defend staff at the young offenders institution, saying a report last year found that the Aylesbury facility was improving.

A spokesman said: “In its most recent inspection, independent inspectors described HMP Aylesbury as an ‘improving prison’ that provides good resettlement services for this challenging population.

“This helps reduce the chances of them reoffending on release.

“The Governor and his staff are working hard to address the identified areas for improvement.”

Aylesbury Prison holds long term male inmates between the ages of 17 and 21 only.

Accommodation for inmates at the Bierton Road facility comprises of single and double cells in eight residential wings.
