Thame Town have decided to shake things up ahead of the new season by recruiting an Australian player-coach.

Deon Laubscher, of Adelaide, played grade cricket as a wicket-keeper and right-handed batsman for the Southern Districts club.

The new arrival said: “Having just arrived in Thame, I am coming to terms with the weather - it was 40 degrees when I left Adelaide.

“But I am looking forward to playing in English conditions.”

With the Ashes returning to England in July Laubscher, who unsurprisingly names former Aussie captain Ricky Ponting as his favourite player, admits he is looking forward to watching his fellow countrymen try to wrestle back their title.

Laubscher’s new role will involve helping to coach the club’s junior players and working on the fitness of the seniors as he is a fitness coach and personal trainer by profession.

Thame’s league season in the Cherwell League Division 1 starts in the second week of May at Horspath.

Before then though they have a friendly lined up against Tiddington.
