What a difference a year makes at Weston Turville Golf Club as all the past lady captains turned out to play in the annual challenge competition.
Last year the monsoon rains put a dampener on most of the big events, however this year the sun has been shining which has been reflected in some great scores.
The annual Captains Challenge featured 14 past captains, which included skippers as far back as Pat Randall in 1987, and still playing a mean game of golf.
Each captain was joined by three club members in a Texas Scramble event over 18 holes, and in perfect conditions there were a lot of birdies on offer.
And as it proved the team that putted best on the day won the event, the in-form vice captain Jean Garrett ably assisted by Ann Tomkins, Ann Riley and Pauline Settle won with a nett 62. Not far behind was the 2007 captain Sally Stobie with Jo Beazley, Anita Parker and Mal Barnett with a nett 62.4.
But a bogey on the last cost this year’s captain Sheelagh Culverhouse and her team of Anna Williams, Cath Sellers and Sandie Cumberland the title as they finished on 62.7.
For the other teams it was a matter of what might have been as putts just rolled past the hole or lipped out.
