At just 10 years of age and with a whole season still left at U11 level, Ashfold school boy Etha Rose claimed both the singles and doubles U11 National Badminton titles at the weekend in the face of some stiff competition.
Based in Thame and coached under the watchful eye of Oxfordshire head performance coach James Barclay, Rose came through 11 matches to claim both titles in front of his family and friends at the Redbridge Sports Centre, Essex, one of last summer’s Olympic warm up venues.
In a nail biting singles final Rose eventually came out on top against home player Akhil Pilai of Essex 13-15, 15-8, 15-13.
Not content with being the best singles player of his age group at the tournament, Rose then followed it up swiftly by making the doubles final where he played with regular partner Alex Green of Surrey.
Both boys played well and after just over 15 minutes of game time secured a comprehensive straight games victory 15-9, 15-7.
