Aylesbury Rugby Club says progress on their major redevelopment has been ‘rapid’ in the last month.

The club’s original contractor was released after the structure to “top plate” was complete due to cost.

The build has been plagued with a number of issues including inclement weather, the state of the old clubhouse fabric – once exposed – and difficulties with suppliers.

While this has led to delays and frustration the club insists at no time has the build been ‘out of control’.

“While we had hoped to avoid going into debt above the interest free loan from the RFU, we have had to apply for funding by way of a further loan to cover some of the additional expense,” a spokesman for the club said.

“The RFU, the bank and an independent reviewer all are very comfortable that we can service this debt.

“The main changing rooms are complete, and the main hall looks terrific, with the floor now complete down to the partition.

“The bar will be complete within the next fortnight – pretty much as scheduled. The video and sound systems are operational, along with the heating, lighting, kitchen and hall toilets.

“We appreciate that it has been a hard slog.”
