Aylesbury’s top table tennis players have taken the plaudits in competitions in neighbouring counties in the last two weeks.
Reigning Aylesbury singles champion, Andy Misseldine from Haddenham A, recently won the Oxford Table Tennis League Division One title, the Hewitt Cup, for the second time by beating Jingyu Sun 11-5 in the decider.
It was all Sun in the first game, but Misseldine got his block working at its best by the end of the second as the score got to 10-10 and they remained locked till Misseldine finally broke the deadlock 17-15.
He slipped in the third, but equalised by snatching the fourth 13-11. By the fifth, it was all going Misseldine’s way and he ran out the winner 11-5.
Following this up, Andy competed in the Wycombe Tournament together with his Haddenham compatriot, Mark Scott, Ridgeway’s Dawn Pearce and Sports stars, Nick and Robert Hansell.
Andy took the Veterans Cup but was beaten in a tough semi-final of the men’s event by Mark 11-9 in the fifth set.
Mark met Robert in the final, losing 3-1.
Andy and Mark joined forces to take the men’s doubles beating Robert and Nick Hansell. Pearce lost to Mary Heffernan in the ladies singles but partnered Robert to a fine mixed doubles win.
Aylesbury’s own tournament event takes place at Stoke Mandeville Stadium on Sunday April 22.
