AN Aylesbury swimmer and his coach are off to Hungary to compete in the European Aquatics Championships next month.
Maxwell and Great Britain swimmer Craig Gibbons, the winner of The Bucks Herald’s Sports Personality of the Month award for March, and his coach Kevin Brooks have both been selected for the championships – Brooks as a GB coach.
After a successful British Gas Swimming Championships, five Olympic hopefuls will head to Hungary for the Euros which take place in Debrecen from May 14-27.
The event will see a mix of experience and youth compete to gain some valuable race practice as part of their preparation for the London Olympics in August.
Commonwealth medalists James Goddard, Robbie Renwick and Michael Jamieson will be looking to put in some solid swims to sharpen their racing skills while Maxwell’s Craig Gibbons and Sophie Allen will make up the team of five.
Participation in the European Championships was made optional for British Olympians like Gibbons and swimmers were encouraged to base their decisions on whether participation would enhance or compromise their preparation for the Games this summer.
The five who accepted the invitation will not be tapered for peak performance but will benefit from the opportunity to sharpen their racing skills.
Proud coach Brooks will now perform the same role for his country at the Euros.
“I’m delighted to have been selected – being selected to coach on a senior team for Great Britain is a big step up and especially where each athlete has already qualified for the Olympics.
“It’s is a huge deal and such a great opportunity”.
