Before the monsoon-like weather hit the fairways of Weston Turville Golf Club on a cool April Sunday morning, 11 even teams took part in the Pat Curtis Alliance, a team competition of four players with two scores to count at each hole.

The scoring proved to be a little disappointing with the winning score being well below last year’s competition.

However the Italian partnership of Raf Iannone, Carl Elliott, Cliff Palumbo and Mick DiMaria took the first prize with a score of 88 points, although at the prizegiving three team members deserted Di Maria possibly because they thought they had no chance of winning.

In second place was the much-fancied team of Robin Jenner, Steve Stone, Clayton Barlow and Brian Gofton with 85.

For the men at Turville their Chiltern Breakfast League season started with an away fixture at Princes Risborough.

New team manager Dave Ranson has high hopes for an improvement on last year’s third place finish. The team arrived at Risborough to find that maintenance on all the greens had resulted in large amounts of sand deposits lying on the green.

But it seemed to affect the home side which resulted in a great victory for Turville by four and a half matches to one and a half.

The opening match with Flecknell and Coenen resulted in a two-up victory, with further wins from Haworth and Ranson by 2and1, Kinsella and Stone by 4and2 and Garrett and Wibberley by 4and2. Furlong and Bentham halved their match, however Barlow and Gofton were unlucky to lose on the last green of an epic match.
