Thame United’s manager said he is hoping for back to back wins when they host local rivals Oxford City Nomads on Saturday.

United put in their performance of the season as a two goal salvo from Stuart Barr helped them defeat Newbury 3-1 at the ASM Stadium on Tuesday.

Mark West said: “We have not really been getting the results we have deserved lately but we put in a good solid performance.

“We had a full team out and we won quite comfortably in the end.”

United surprised their third placed opponents as they rushed out of the blocks with Luke Ricketts reacting quickest to turn home after five minutes.

Barr’s drive in the 65th minute doubled Thame’s lead before the midfielder scored the pick of the day.

West called it a ‘proper goal’ as his team quickly broke down the wing. After a cheeky back heel, Mitchell Meredith fired in a teasing ball for Barr to nip ahead of his marker and head in.

Newbury grabbed a late consolation but United held firm.

West said picking up points was vital with United playing top two, Marlow and Witney in the coming weeks.

“The next week is not going to be any easier. It’s going to be tough, but if we play like that we can beat anyone in this league.”

Thame host the Nomads tomorrow (kick-off 3pm) and West said he fully expects his side to win.

He added: “If we can get back to back wins that breeds confidence. That’s why we need to get on a winning run. Hopefully we might then start creeping up that league.”
