Risborough Rangers opened their pre-season campaign with a friendly away at Thame United in the blistering heat.
With a number of new faces on show for the visitors, this was always going to be a good test against an Hellenic Premier League side, and with only two minutes on the clock, the hosts took an early league with a close-range header.
It was not all one-way traffic, however, as in the 10th minute, former Thame player Lawrence Clark almost equalised for Risborough with an audacious effort that came back off the bar from 20 yards out.
Rangers settled into the game and were playing with confidence, but five minutes before the break a second goal arrived for the hosts.
Risborough’s response was almost immediate, though, as within three minutes they pulled a goal back through Danny Gray’s emphatic finish from Martin Griggs’ well-placed cross following good build-up play.
After the break, Thame restored their two-goal lead from a free-kick that hit the bar and was tapped home before a fourth goal that looped over the Rangers goalkeeper.
Despite the 4-1 scoreline played in soaring temperatures, this was an entertaining game and Rangers will take some positives from the match as they move onto their next friendly.
Rangers were due to play last night, Tuesday, in their second pre-season match away at Aylesbury Dynamos.
On Saturday, in their first home pre-season friendly game, Risborough host Aston Clinton at Windsors. Kick-off is at 3pm.
This is followed on Tuesday 29 July by another home game when Rangers take on South Midlands Premier outfit Tring Athletic at 7.45pm.
