The weather, celebrities and sportsmen all played their part in the inaugural Tesco Extra Charity Shield match on Sunday, but spectator numbers were ‘very disappointing’.

That’s according to organiser and former Aylesbury Vale District Councillor Maria Butler, who had worked tirelessly to ‘put on a bit of a show’ for the people of Aylesbury.

A PDC Darts All Stars team emerged victorious 10-7 over an Afghan Heroes squad but the real winners were charities Afghan Heroes and Cancer Research UK, with £677 raised and the figure set to rise following an auction.

While the few spectators that did turn out were treated to a fun-packed day, Butler voiced her disappointment at the turnout.

“We always get moans and groans that there is nothing to do in Aylesbury, and then we put on a big free event like this and people don’t turn up.”
