Aylesbury United boss Tony Joyce has welcomed old friend Steve Bateman to bitter rivals Aylesbury FC but hopes he can get one over on him when the clubs clash.
Speaking ahead of his side’s Red Insure Cup match against local rivals Chesham on Wednesday night, Joyce took the chance to wish Bateman well after the experienced non league boss was appointed as the new manager of the Moles at the weekend.
Former QPR youngster Joyce revealed the pair are good friends and go back a long way.
He said: “I have known Steve for over 20 years.
“I played with him briefly at Chesham and I knew him when he worked at both Chesham and Hemel Hempstead.
“He is a good appointment and one of his strengths is in motivating players.
“With the exception of when we play his side on Boxing Day when I will be wanting to get one over on him, I wish him the best of luck in his tenure at Haywood Way.”
United entertain high flying Chesham from 7.45pm tonight, and Joyce said he was optimistic of having a fully fit squad as his side aim for another cup scalp against higher-ranked opponents.
He said: “We expect to have Joey Acheampong and Greg Williams back, and both Dom Petrucci and Richard Armstrong should be fit as well so we will approach the Chesham match with confidence as we have nothing to lose.”
