THAME manger Mark West hailed the visit of a Manchester United Legends team as a ‘great day for the club’.

A team comprised of a host of household names and Red Devil stars including Champions League winner Denis Irwin visited the ASM stadium on Bank Holiday Monday.

Thanks to an equaliser from manager Mark West, Thame held their illustrious counterparts to a 2-2 draw in a game played in a friendly atmosphere.

West said: “It was a great day for the club. I said I’d give myself five minutes but I ended up playing more like 45 minutes.

“The game was played at a slower tempo and it suited some of the older players like myself.

“You could tell they absolutely oozed class, their first touch was brilliant and they scored two fantastic goals.

“I was so glad to get out there and play against FA Cup and Champions League winners.”

West said the game was played in real friendly atmosphere.

“There were hardly any hard tackles. The only one I can remember was when one of our young lads went in on Jake Collinge, our chairman, who played a few minutes for them.”

Thame United take on Staines Lammas at home in the FA Cup this Saturday.

“It’s going to be tough, they beat Witney who are in our league 4-0 in the last round,” added West.
