Fortune favours Chinnor at last in ‘outstanding’ Thatcham win

CHINNOR produced yet another outstanding team performance to send Thatcham back home with nothing in a 2-0 win.

Chinnor’s first half dominance was the key, but a slice of good fortune certainly helped when the referee booked Thatcham forward Shaun Thorpe for what he judged as a dive in the Chinnor penalty area on the stroke of half-time.

Chinnor started the game brightly and took the lead on four minutes when Gary Marshall’s intelligent run was picked out by Steve Newell down the inside right channel.

Marshall’s perfect cross found the unmarked Mark Jones at the far post, and he volleyed home from close range. Luke Fisher made Chinnor’s possession pay when he calmly sent the keeper one way and chipped the ball the other to make it 2-0.

Just when Chinnor were looking to kill the game, Thatcham looked to have got a penalty.

Most people thought it was a penalty but the referee saw it as a dive and produced a yellow card instead, much to Chinnor’s relief as they went on to grind out a 2-0 win.
