The rock at the back of Aylesbury United’s promotion and cup winning season John Mulholland has been ruled out for ‘most, if not all’ of the new season with a ruptured cruciate ligament and damaged knee cartilage.
The news comes as a blow to boss Tony Joyce, for whom Mulholland is one of the first names on the teamsheet. A statement on United’s official website on Monday afternoon said: “It is devastating news for both the player and club after such an innocuous looking injury sustained last season at London Colney.”
The giant 27-year-old fans’ favourite is currently awaiting a date for his operation on the knee, but with likely recovery time of nine months minimum it will be a long road of recuperation.
The statement added: “We wish Fritz (Mulholland’s nickname) all the best in his recovery.”
Mulholland’s teammate and another long-term Ducks injury victim, Lee Bricham, took to Twitter in support of the defender.
He said: “Really choked to here the news about my pal. Got quite close since both being injured so feel gutted for him.”
