AN Aylesbury futsal side claimed some major scalps in an impressive cup run at the weekend.
For the second year running after winning the Berks and Bucks Futsal Qualifiers, Aylesbury Legioni represented the Berks and Bucks and Aylesbury College Futsal League, by competing in the FA Cup South East regional Futsal finals on Saturday.
After a strong performance, the side eventually came unstuck to a slick vastly experienced Spartan’s FC, who are one of the UK’s top sides.
Manager Angelo Mendicino said: “The team did me proud, considering the big step up in class and standards of teams, when competing in national competitions.
“Our biggest scalp of the day was the beating of East Ham Futsal club, who regularly compete at the national stages.
“I would also like to say a big thank you to the guys who stepped in last minute, who had to adapt to the game of Futsal very quick.”
Futsal is a skillful game which uses a smaller ball than regular football.
A league is currently running at Aylesbury College, and Aylesbury Legioni are currently undefeated in the Aylesbury League and have been undefeated for two seasons.
In this time, they have won three league titles and three cup competitions.
The team consists of Aylesbury based players who competed in five-a-side leagues, before transferring across to Futsal.
Angelo said: “Hopefully the Aylesbury College futsal league will grow in stature and the standard of competition improves. We need to attract the best local five-a-side players, this is the only way we will improve our town’s chances of progressing to that next stage, by greater competition locally.”
