AYLESBURY FC are looking for a new manager after chairman Danny Martone said Steve Smith was ‘too inexperienced’ to continue in the role.
But Smith will instead move on to the FC committee and lead a drive to enthuse more young fans to follow the club in a role as community development officer.
The search for a new boss is already under way and the club hopes to have someone in place soon.
Speaking to The Bucks Herald, Martone thanked Smith for his efforts.
“Steve is young and inexperienced but I have to say he did exactly what he said he would do. He said he would keep us in the division and he achieved that,” he said.
“We’re grateful to him for that and he had a lot to deal with and I’m really glad he is not leaving the club. Steve is ideally placed to go into his new role because he has got the club at heart and he will make sure it works.”
Martone said he thinks Smith will manage the club again one day but admitted the club’s former keeper was naturally very disappointed.
“He’s obviously gutted he didn’t carry on. But he also realises he hasn’t got the experience needed at the moment.”
Martone said the club has had a ‘bit of interest’ in the vacant manager’s position so far, one from within FC and two external and expects that to increase as they weigh up their next move.
