Athletic looking anything but as pre-season ring rust halts progress in Charity Shield

Tring Athletic suffered the same fate as Team GB on Saturday when they went out of a cup competition on penalties, only in their case it was in the Herts Charity Shield rather than the Olympics.

The first round of this county competition is used as preparation for the new season and Athletic’s performance in the first half suggests the side are still somewhat ring rusty.

They fell a goal behind just before the break.

And although there were signs of improvement in the second half, as they levelled the scores, they were unable to find a winner.

With a minute to go before half-time, Hoddesdon were awarded a free-kick just outside the Athletic area and Ben Andreos found the bottom corner.

On 69 minutes interplay between Graham Hall and George House led to the ball falling nicely to Reon Thomas in the area and he wasted no time in crashing home the equaliser for Tring.

Unusually at full-time there was no extra-time and the game went straight to penalties.

It was Hoddesdon who emerged victorious 7-6 and they will now entertain Berkhamsted in the next round of the competition.

A crowd of 60 turned out for the pre-season cup match, and Tring will be hoping for big support this season.
