A benefits cheat who went out to work while claiming thousands in benefits has been ordered to pay the money back.

Emma Finlay, of Foskett Way, pleaded guilty at Aylesbury Magistrates’ Court to dishonestly claiming £2,737 in housing and council tax benefit and £902 in income support.

The court was told the 33-year-old started work in November 2012 but did not tell Aylesbury Vale District Council and the Department for Work and Pensions.

Finlay was fined £450, ordered to pay court costs of £85 and will have to repay the money fraudulently claimed.

Councillor Neil Blake, leader of Aylesbury Vale District Council, said: “This is another example of someone claiming money that is not rightfully theirs.

“Benefit cheats take money intended for the most vulnerable in our society and the public, quite rightly, get angry about such behaviour.

“With the public’s support we are closing in on and catching these individuals. We always aim to protect the public purse and in particular the taxpayers of AVDC.”
