Superheroes will descend on Aylesbury town centre next month during a 5km fun run in aid of Florence Nightingale Hospice’s children’s team, Florries.

Registration is now open for the run, jog, walk or even crawl on Sunday, May 3, and participants are being encouraged to dress up as their favourite superhero on the day.

“Our Florrie’s Superhero event is perfect for both the super fit who want to run the course at super-human speed, and those who simply want a fun stroll with all the family on a Sunday morning,” explained Karen Shardlow, event lead.

“No matter what your age or ability, it’s a great way for the whole community to come together and be part of this super event in aid of our Florrie’s Children’s Team; providing vital hospice care in the home. Please show your support and help us raise much-needed funds for Florrie’s – a service which costs Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity over £100,000 each year to run.”

Local businesses including Dead Universe Comics, Aqua Vale, George David Estate Agents and Market Square-based The Works, who will be running a special ‘design a superhero milkshake’ competition in the run-up to the big day, are all lending their support to the event.

“Dressing up isn’t compulsory,” said Karen, “but it’s the perfect excuse for superhero fans to go the extra mile and become Iron Man or Cat woman! We think our Florrie’s children are all little superheroes, so we’re hoping local supporters will take on the challenge to also be heroes for the day, in honour of such a fantastic, local cause.”

Florrie’s Children’s Team leader, Angie Pestka said: “Having a sick child means families are providing 24-hour care, so it’s vital for parents, in particular the main carer, to have some time off to recharge batteries. Florrie’s nurses help achieve this goal, by offering specialist palliative home-based care and support to the child; tailored to the individual needs of the family.”

To take part in the event, simply register online at www.aylesburysuperhero.co.uk or contact the Fundraising Team on 01296 429975. Entry costs:

£10 per adult (aged 16+)

£7.50 per child (kids under 2 go free)

£30.00 – Special family ticket (up to 2 adults & 2 children - saving £5)

The Florrie’s team currently care for over 60 families across the local area including North and South Bucks, Bedfordshire and parts of Oxfordshire.

Last year, 779 home visits were made to poorly children battling life-limiting illness in the comfort of their own home.
