Land in Wendover will be sold for development, despite pleas for it to become a play area.

Nearly 500 people signed a petition for the former garage site off Barlow Road to be turned into a park.

Aylesbury Vale District Council’s cabinet approved plans to sell the land, saying the site would be unsuitable for a play area.

The council has promised to locate a site where a play area can be built. However, campaigners fear this may take a long time to happen, if it ever does.

Leona Wheals, who has two young daughters and organised the petition, said: “Your community should come ahead of financial gain.

“At least postpone accepting offers on the land until you have looked into other sites.

“Once that land is gone the community and our children are going to be left with nothing.”

Councillor Michael Edmonds, deputy council leader, said: “I believe we are having our cake and eating it and I think Wendover could, too.

“We can sell the site for houses and look into where we can find another site for a play area.”
