PEOPLE in Thame are being warned about cold callers who are claiming they can fix computer bugs.
The alert comes after 23 people reported the scam to the Oxfordshire County Council’s trading standards team, which is urging people to be extra vigilant and check ID before letting cold callers into the property.
The con crooks often say they work for major names like Microsoft or Windows, although many different names are used.
They will then suggest that the householder’s computer is at serious risk from the viruses with which it is infected.
If the consumer falls for the scam, they will be directed to a website to download a programme which will allow the caller to control the computer to fix it.
But what is happening is that the conmen are being given access to all the data stored on the computer, which could include personal, banking and identity information.
After this the conmen demand a payment of up to £240 to protect the computer from further viruses.
