Fresh questions have been raised about Stoke Mandeville Hospital’s management after a former director of nursing said Jimmy Savile enjoyed ‘freedom to walk wherever he wanted’ and that staff were afraid to challenge him.

Christine McFarlane told ITV news: “Along with the power, people were afraid of Jimmy stopping raising money for the hospital.”

Savile helped raise more than £40 million for the hospital’s spinal unit.

Bucks Healthcare NHS Trust said: “We continue to be shocked by the allegations.

“We take the protection of our patients very seriously. We have no record of any incidents of this nature occurring and we absolutely would have taken swift action if anything had been bought to our attention.”
