Plans to build a crematorium in Watermead have been unveiled just weeks after a rival plan was put forward down the road in Bierton.

The Westerleigh Group proposes to build on the site of the Riviera Restaurant in Watermead.

Development director for the group Adrian Britton said he felt there was a need for Aylesbury to have its own crematorium.

He said: “We recognised this need some time ago but it is only in the last nine months that we have been able to advance our plans with a view to being granted planning permission.”

Proposals were unveiled by the group which runs Amersham Crematorium in February for a new site in Cane End Lane in Bierton.

Mr Britton said: “We are aware that there are plans for a crematorium on land near Bierton but realistically only one of the applications is likely to be granted planning permission.

“I believe our application will get the go-ahead because it is a small building on what is mainly a disused site at the moment.

“With good landscaping, it would barely be seen, where as the other proposed crematorium is in open countryside.”

Mr Britton added the company was optimistic of getting work underway soon.

He said: “We hope to be able to get an application in over the summer, with a view to starting building this year and then completing the project next year.”

Watermead Parish Council chair Sue Severn said: “My personal view is that this is a wholly inappropriate use of the land.

“I also believe the site is too close to residential housing.”
