Independent retailers across Thame gathered on July 4 to celebrate their own version of the American holiday.

Independence Day was given a British twist as stores nationwide embraced Skillsmart Retail’s campaign motto of ‘flying the flag for local retailers’.

Independents’ Day was launched as a means of celebrating the diversity of shops.

Customers were also encouraged to take a picture of a purchase they had made and upload it to Twitter saying where they had bought it.

The best picture was selected with Hannah Collins receiving a £20 gift voucher for a photo of herself with a hair product she had bought from Zen hair salon.

Throughout the day, pictures from independent shops Bizzie Lizzie, Shoe Care, Time Out and others appeared on the social networking site. Thame mayor Nigel Champken Woods made an appearance at Powder to try out the various aftershaves available.
