To commemorate 60 years since the conquest of Everest a team of mountaineers from Aylesbury will climb the tower of Quainton Parish Church.

The event today (Saturday) starts at 9.30am and later in the day there is a chance for you to join in.

Climbing equipment and professional advice and instruction will be available to anyone who wants to tackle the climb.

There will be a £30 sponsorship fee which will go towards the Tower Fund and the Himalayan Trust, Sir Edmund Hillary’s own foundation which supports Sherpa communities in Nepal.

Quainton man, Tom Bourdillon, was a member of the team which conquered Everest and there is a memorial to him in the churchyard.

Breakfast will be available to the climbers and spectators and in the afternoon tea and homemade cakes will be on sale.

The Tower Fund is a project to enhance the church with a glass screen between the tower and nave so that visitors can watch the bell ringers and admire historic marble monuments now under lock and key.
