Scenes from The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe are just some of the Christmas crackers in store at Waddesdon Manor this winter, writes Natalee Hazelwood.
Each year the manor manages to outshine the last in a never ending bid to capture the perfect Christmas.
This year there is something for every generation with classic attractions such as the reindeer trail and letters to Santa for the young and young at heart.
During December the tale inside the house has followed one of the four Rothschild sons as they travelled across the globe to find their fortune. It is the turn of the last brother, Nathan who ventured to London so expect a truly red, white and blue extravaganza with Big Ben and Shakespeare themed displays.
And as if this wasn’t enough then you cant fail to miss the spectacular Angel of Light shimmering at dusk alongside Blue Moon On A Platter, both by artist Bruce Munro.
Mr Munro said “Blue Moon is a new installation, never exhibited before, and was inspired by the romantic setting of the grassy amphitheatre.”
And for his Angel of Light, he said: “The addition of the candlelit element came to me later when I realised that beyond my initial vision, the angel could have a different character after dark with a touch of illumination around its edges.”
Pippa Shirley, head of collections at the manor, said “We are incredibly excited to be working with Bruce, and particularly to launch a major collaboration with him at a moment in the year which is all about light and celebration.
“It is also wonderful to build on our contemporary programme with an artist who revels in the opportunity to bring gardens to life at night through light sculptures which are both joyous and ethereal.”
“2012 has been a landmark year for our contemporary programme. During the main season we worked with Edmund de Wall who created a series of site-specific installations through the ground floor of the manor.
“And we also collaborated with Christie’s on a major exhibition of contemporary sculpture inspired by the theme of the house of cards.
“Bruce Munro’s contemporary response to Waddesdon in light brings the year to a splendid climax.
“Both installations will compliment our other Christmas displays, both on the north front and the reindeer trail through the woodland playground, as well as taking advantage of the shorter winter days to bring the gardens alive in the dusk.”
Blue Moon on a Platter and Angel of Light run until January 1, 2013.
