IF you’re defeated by cryptic crosswords, then help is at hand.

Tony Long has been solving cryptic crosswords for over 50 years and compiling them for 20 years.

Now, he will be taking a light-hearted look at the mysteries of the cryptic clue, in a special talk at The Players Theatre in Nelson Street, called Cracking Cryptics.

Tony will be outlining the various kinds of clues encountered and giving some basic rules to guide the would-be solver through the apparently impenetrable maze.

Full of humour and all illustrated on the cinema screen, this promises to be a most enjoyable evening for the more experienced as well as the novice cryptic crossword solver. Tony said: “I’ve solved something like 10,000 cryptic crosswords over the years so feel well qualified to pass on the techniques to others.

“There are literally millions of people trying to solve the crosswords in our newspapers every day and this is my attempt to reveal some of the mysteries.”

Tony’s 30 years of treading the boards with Thame Players should ensure the performance is as entertaining as it is enlightening.

The show will be at The Players Theatre at 7.45pm on Saturday October 23. Tickets cost £5 and can be obtained from Tickets Anywhere, Greyhound Walk, Thame, telephone 01844 217228.

All proceeds will go to the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity.
