HE is best known for spending 22 years on TV show Have I Got News For You, but few people realise that Paul Merton still performs live on stage at least once a week.

“It’s a performance muscle. If it’s not getting flexed, it gets flabby,” says the comedian as he prepares to bring his new Out Of My Head stage show to Aylesbury Waterside Theatre.

“When Have I Got News For You comes around, I don’t think ‘Oh no, I’m a bit rusty’ – doing The Comedy Store Players every Sunday, you’re match fit all the time.”

On Wednesday (tonight) he will perform in Aylesbury as part of his new 50-date tour – which is his first since 1998.

“It has stand-up, sketches, interaction with the audience, and a few things that will startle people,” he explains.

“I get such a buzz from performing live. You immediately know whether it’s funny because you’ll hear the sound of laughter – or not!”

Paul Merton takes to the stage at 8pm.
