With just five weeks left of their 18 week programme, the 23 participants in the Iain Rennie Hospice’s Biggest Loser contest have already lost nearly 40 stone between them and are now pushing for a sprint finish in both their weight loss and their fundraising.
In return for raising money to support the hospice the Biggest Losers have received free gym membership, personal training sessions and ongoing fitness and nutritional advice to help them along the way.
Four gyms in Bucks and Herts are supporting the programme and each has a team of ‘losers’ to support and motivate.
Seven participants are based at Nuffield Health in Aylesbury and a further six are based at the Core Strength Gym in Halton, near Wendover.
So far the six Biggest Losers at Wendover have lost just over nine stone and the seven at Nuffield Health have lost nearly 13 stone with guidance from the gym teams and with the help of Melanie Ryding, the nutritionist.
Cindy Barnes from Aylesbury is based at the Nuffield Health Gym.
She said: “My experience doing the Biggest Loser has been life changing.
“My trainer, Brett, has been such a great help, even in low weeks.
“I have made some truly amazing friends and had a good time changing my life.”
Sarah Mobsby is based at the Core Strength Gym in Halton, Wendover and is delighted with her weight loss so far:
“The support from Gemma at Core Strength in Halton has been invaluable and a real support in keeping my motivation.
“The weekly sessions with her make a change from our gym programmes and are varied each week.
“Core Strength is a fantastic, relaxed and friendly gym.
“I felt comfortable from the start and the outdoor gym space is great.
“For the first time I have actually enjoyed exercising!”
Sarah and Cindy are now competing against the other participants on their teams to become their gym’s Biggest Loser.
The ‘loser’ who decreases their BMI by the biggest percentage will win a year’s free gym membership and a free makeover and will also have the chance of becoming the overall Biggest Loser 2013 by going head to head with the winners from the other gyms.
The overall winner will receive a prize of a two night weekend stay at De Vere Venues’ Wokefield Park in a Mansion House Suite.
The participant who raises the most money in sponsorship will also receive a prize of a free night’s accommodation with dinner, bed and breakfast at the Whittlebury Hall Hotel and Spa near Towcester.
All prizes will be awarded at a final celebration in June.
The sponsorship money raised from the weight loss efforts of the Biggest Losers will help Rennie Grove Hospice Care (the new name for Iain Rennie) fund their services for local patients diagnosed with cancer and other life-limiting illness and support services for their families.
