A Sainsbury’s boss has made the biggest hint yet that the supermarket is planning to open a petrol station in Aylesbury in the near future.

Sainsbury’s wants to build a store in Gatehouse Road – but the lack of a petrol station in the plans has been met with disappointment from locals.

However, Tim Watkins, Sainsbury’s regional development executive, said this afternoon: “We are actively working on plans for a new petrol station in response to requests from the local community.

“We hope to make an announcement on the petrol station proposal shortly.”

It is unlikely the petrol station would be built on the Gatehouse Road site, as this would have to be included in the planning application due to be decided on Wednesday.

Mr Watkins said of the Gatehouse Road plans, which have been backed by planning officers: “From the community feedback we have received there is overwhelming for our proposals which would provide real food shopping choice, new jobs for local people, much needed new, affordable homes and regenerate two prominent brown field sites in Aylesbury.

“We therefore hope that committee members will approve our planing applications to invest in Aylesbury.”
