A ray of light for our youth centre

THE future is looking slightly brighter for Thame Youth Centre under new proposals being considered by council bosses.

Oxfordshire County Council is set to approve the transfer of assets and possible funding for the centre in the grounds of Lord Williams’s School.

It is proposed that ownership of the building is transferred to the school which will then take over its management with the support of the town council.

In addition, a bid for £16,650 for a full-time youth worker is likely to be approved based on the town council agreeing to fund the post in future years.

The moves are part of the much-debated Big Society concept which aims to create an environment in which it is possible for communities to do things for themselves.

Councillor Kieron Mallon, cabinet member for policy, said: “There’s been a lot of doom-mongers who closed their eyes and ears to what we’ve been trying to achieve.

“Surely now even they must acknowledge the hard work that has gone in to reaching this position.

“I’m confident we’ll get yet more bids for youth provision in future waves of the Big Society Fund.”
