Youngsters at Maxwell Swimming Club are showing Aylesbury’s pool of talent runs deep after making the National Championships.

Less than three months into the new season and the club already has plenty to celebrate after four youngsters achieved qualifying times for the National Championships taking place in Sheffield next summer. George Manser, 14), James Eddy, 13, Abbie Haward, 17 and Tom Elgar, 18, have all been with Maxwell since learning to swim with the club’s Academy. Head coach and former Olympian Marc Spackman said he was delighted with the progress of the quartet.

“I’m delighted that George, James, Abbie and Tom have achieved their national times so early in the season, as they truly deserve their success.

“Their results encourage us to be very excited about the rest of the season for all our swimmers.”

As part of Maxwell’s ongoing development, a new structure has been introduced for the Academy, which caters for its youngest members between the ages of eight and 11. Bill Elgar, head coach of the Academy, has introduced the opportunity for some of the club’s teenage swimmers to get involved in coaching alongside his qualified team. Elgar said: “The junior coaches bring huge enthusiasm, and act as role models for our younger swimmers. It is a great opportunity for them to enhance their CVs and develop skills for awards such as Duke of Edinburgh. Some may even go on to create a career in swimming.”
