The opening week of the new table tennis season in Aylesbury was played under a cloud of uncertainty after plans were announced to close the league’s venue.

Aylesbury Vale District Council has decided in principal to close Elmhurst Community Centre which has been home to the Aylesbury Table Tennis League for a number of years.

As reported in last week’s Bucks Herald, the venue looks set to close but table tennis league organisers hope people will petition the council to reconsider.

“The venue is ideally suited to indoor sport and holds up to six tables in the league’s drop-in Friday evening sessions,” a league spokesman said.

“Over the past year interest has grown in table tennis, especially in the younger age groups and has led to the purchase of a robot and the recruitment of an ETTA coach for the future.

“As well as creating problems for the other hirers, the actions of the council will have a dramatic effect within the community, especially as the Government has advocated sport for all.

“If the centre is lost, it means that all the volunteer organisers will have to attempt to relocate their events to another venue if they can find one that will be suitable and, in the case of table tennis, also available on Friday evenings.

“The league committee want to call on as many people as possible to petition the council to rethink this drastic decision.

“Messages of support can be sent to the Aylesbury and District Table Tennis League’s official website www.adttl.com or the council at leisureservices@aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk
