The summer finally arrived in time for the Grade 3 Great Missenden Open Junior Tournament at the weekend.
The first day saw 41 boys battle out for the Under 9 title in blistering sunshine. Oliver Tarvet (Batchwood) came through convincingly 7 – 2, 7 – 2 as the eventual winner against Andre Raath (Batchwood) having only dropped 4 points in all of his 5 matches.
Local club interest saw Alice Patch (GM) overcome Sian Payne (Devon) in a tense emotional Girls U18 final. Alice dominated the first set but Sian so very powerful but erratic suddenly acquired some consistency to comfortably take the 2nd set. The 3rd set was a rollercoaster with the lead changing constantly. Alice retrieved well when bombarded with Sian’s vicious attack and in the end Alice’s consistency helped her win the final set 7 – 5. Sian overcame her disappointment, and in the U16 final took on promising Holly Hutchinson (Halton). Both girls are exceptionally hard hitting and with strong serves but both are inclined to serve too many double faults. Some dubious line calls saw Sian win the final set 6 – 3. Holly’s consolation came in the U14 final where she comfortably beat Amelia Campbell (Langley) 6 – 1, 6 – 0. The score did not reflect the quality of the game where Amelia produced some superb controlled retrieving but Holly would not allow Amelia into the game. One cracking girl’s final was in the U10 event where Scarlet Hutchinson (Halton) was battling against Isabella Swann (Brighton). There was little to choose between either player, both being able to intelligently move the ball about the court but both inclined to serve double faults. Isabella is a compact player, possessing a wonderful backhand shot down the line whilst Scarlet has a very powerful serve. Eventually, it went to a third set tie break which Isabella won 8 – 6.
In the boys event local interest centred on Ben Smith (GM) who was up against great doubles partner Matthew Blood (Berkhamstead). This was a superb final with both boys working hard for every point with consistent play and the ability to vary the height, length and spin on the ball. After many lengthy rallies the match went to a 3rd set tie-break which Ben won 10 -8.
The Men’s Open final was between Kristopher Gray (Glasgow) and Jack Mordey (Langley TC). Kristopher won the first set comprehensively at which point Jack had to retire through injury. Two title winner from last year Jack Haworth (Corby) returned to Gt Missenden to try and win another pair of titles. In the U18 singles his first opponent was George Davies (Twickenham). Whilst this was a close match so many points were won by unforced errors and neither player got into a rhythm. In the 3rd set both players attacked and came to the net more but it was George who held his nerve for longer taking the 3rd set tie-break 7 – 5. In Jack’s 2nd final against Jack Macfarlane (Riverside) it was as if Jack Haworth was a different player. This was a thoroughly entertaining match of excellent quality with both players playing with good width, varying the spin and pace on the ball and producing fantastic retrieving. However, Jack Haworth’s stronger serve, producing aces pulled him through with a 6 – 3, 6 – 4 win. The U12 singles saw Sebastian Harris (Halton) bt Isaac Sturgess (Gosling) 6 – 2, 6 – 4. Sebastian was the more powerful player with the stronger serve and hitting crisper good length shots. However, Isaac is a great fighter and produced some excellent retrieving.
Further interest in local Gt. Missenden club players was seen in the doubles with Poppy King winning the Girls U15 Doubles with Imogen Scarles (GX Bull Lane) and brother Alfie King winning the U10Boys Doubles with Edward Crowston (GX Bull Lane). The tournament was Referee was Andy Fyfe Gt Missenden.
