More than 3,000 spectators turned up at Alfred Rose Park for the Aylesbury Coronation Sports in May 1953 and there was a big shock in store.

Champion athlete McDonald Bailey who finished a poor third in the 100 yards race, blaming a sluggish start on the fact his legs had tightened up during his car journey from London. McDonald, who was born in Trinidad, competed for Great Britain in the men’s 100m at the 1948 London Olympics, where he finished sixth and last in the final and the 1952 Helsinki Olympics where he won the bronze medal. He jointly held the 100m world record at 10.2 seconds between 1951 and 1956.
