A rower from Stoke Mandeville made it to the final of the World Under 23 Championships at the weekend.
Although he finished outside the medals, Michael Mottram put in impressive performances for the GB Rowing Team which won a gold, a silver and a bronze in Lithuania, showing promise for the 2016 Olympic cycle.
Mottram qualified for the final of the lightweight men’s single scull in which he finished fifth.
The rower had a good start in the first A final with British interest on Sunday. Out in lane five in choppy conditions, the Leander Club rower stayed with the pack until just before halfway when Greece, Germany, Switzerland and Holland edged away for an exciting four-boat finish won by Greece.
Mottram finished 10 seconds clear of the Ukrainian boat in sixth.
Team manager for the U23s, Steve Gunn added: “It has been a good performance overall, but we also had a number of near misses. They’ve done so well they’re disappointed, but that just reflects their ambition and the tightness of the racing.”
