Boxer Sam Fitzgerald continued the town’s recent success in the ring when he won the regional heat of the prestigious National Ambition Championships at Hoddesdon Boxing Academy.
The 17-year-old Aylesbury Boxing Club starlet squared off against the vastly more experienced Hoddesdon standout Stuart Connell on his Hertfordshire home turf in the competition formerly known as the CYP Championships.
Fitzgerald was not fazed by his opponent’s strong record and controlled the bout throughout, showing outstanding ringmanship and speed beyond his years.
The best of the action came in the final round as a confident Fitzgerald hit a six shot combination, rocking his opponent to his boots. The verdict was never in doubt as all three judges gave a unanimous verdict to the Aylesbury teenager.
It is onwards and upwards for Fitzgerald as he now goes on to box against what Northern Ireland has to offer in a quest to turn his regional title into a national one.
Senior coach Gary Fitzgerald is excited by the current crop of pugilists in the town.
He said: “We have a really strong group of lads at the gym and this is our second regional title this year.
“The diligent work of our coaching staff and the dedication of our boxers is now paying dividends, it is only a matter of time before we are bringing home national titles.”
