More than 220 competitors took part in this year’s Boxing Day Road Race around Aylesbury yesterday.
The popular annual race, organised by Vale of Aylesbury Athletics Club, was severely lacking in fancy dress costumes this year as runners turned out to win.
The 5k race winner was Owain Jones with Fabian Downes in second and Ben Sutherland third. For the ladies, Tory Mobley was first across the line followed by Vale of Aylesbury’s very own Julia Austin and Helena Eastham.
In addition to the top three, prizes were also awarded to Thomas Rayner (U15); Kieran Lindars (U17); Eddie O’Gorman (V40); Graham Smith (V50) and Tim Kelly (V60). Kieran also took the prize for first Vale athlete having finished fifth overall.
The ladies’ additional prizes went to Leonie Glasson (U15); Alice Wright (U17); Janette Cardy (V35); Paula Robinson (V45); Heather Fallaize (V55) and Julia Austin was first Vale lady to finish – 43rd overall but second lady.
The junior race had kicked things off on a calm morning but with a slippery surface under foot. The junior race was won by Charlie Scott and Lucy Perkins was the first girl to finish.
A spokesman for Vale of Aylesbury Athletics Club said: “Congratulations to all those who took part showing great dedication less than 24 hours after Christmas lunch! There was also fantastic support from family and friends along the route.
“Huge thanks must go to the volunteers without whom the event could not take place; those who manned the registration point and of course the marshals. “An important part of the day was also the support from the Kingsbury pub and its staff who supplied plenty of warm drinks afterwards to help the thawing process and last but certainly not least, our sponsors Up & Running of Ayelsbury.”
