Christian von Eitzen won gold on his England Schools debut at the weekend but also grabbed a surprise silver to savour too.
The Aylesbury Vale athlete competed for England Schools at the Schools International Athletics Board’s Home Countries International in Dublin on Saturday.
In a tactical 800m with a slow first lap, Christian won a dream gold for his country in 1min 56.41secs.
It was a wonderful achievement, but the story doesn’t end there … unfortunately one of the two athletes selected to run the 1,500m was unable to travel and compete due to a problem with his passport.
A Vale of Aylesbury spokesman explained what happened next.
“For those who know Christian, it will come as no surprise at all that as it was too late to bring in a replacement, he volunteered to double up on events as he knew that it was after his main event.
“So 70 minutes after the 800m finished he lined up for the start of the 1,500m which was also a tactical affair.”
Christian finished in silver medal position in a pb time of 4:02.27, just 3.5 seconds off the club U17 record and also beating the England A string runner who won the English Schools title two weeks before.
