Meanwhile, thanks to excellent preparation and hard work by members of the club Hazells’ Gala Day was again a great success.
Members arrived at 7am on the day and began preparing bottle, tombola, book stall, cooking bacon/sausage rolls and making cups of tea/coffee for early arrivals.
Refreshments were available throughout the day with lunches being provided for the 24 teams (96 players).
Unlike previous years the forecast was for rain but this did not dampen the spirits of all involved.
Visitors watched the skills and high standards of bowls shown by the players, especially when the heavens did eventually open.
The timetable had to be revised with the four groups due to play four games of five ends with the winners of each group playing for first to fourth places.
In a riveting seven-end final, Leighton Buzzard won with Wexham runners-up, Iver Heath (last year’s winners) third and Long Crendon fourth.
Meanwhile, Hazells lost away to Long Crendon last week but were back on form the next day winning at home to Tring 104-86. The highest winning rink was Carol Chanell, Andrew Mackenzie and John Smith 21-15.
Then in a midweek friendly Hazells enjoyed some extremely close and competitive matches and emerged victorious by just three shots (100-97). The highest winning rink went to Sue Smith, Eddie Justice, Ron Jay and George Murdoch (20-12).
At home to Cippenham there was a resounding win for Hazells by 117-68 with the highest rink going to Ian Ramsay, Anne Farmer and George Murdoch.
Then in the final match of the season, Buckingham West End travelled to Aylesbury on Sunday afternoon.
This annual event, plus the addition of sunshine, brought out the best in both teams with Hazells winning 98-85 . The highest winning rink was Nina Griffiths, Kim Challinor, Thornley Bryant and George Murdoch 23-12.
The club has a Presidents vs Captains match this Saturday followed by a corner to corner on Sunday. Following the AGM on October 17 the winter season of events including short mat and cribbage commences.
