The ladies season has had yet another brilliant year, not only winning their Bucks Silver Scratch League for the second year and gaining promotion to the Premier Division, but also seeing the emergence of a number of talented single figure handicap golfers who have done Weston Turville proud.
Two of these single figure golfers Anna Williams and Debbie Retallick found themselves in the final of the Johnson Shield and although both golfers prefer later starts to their rounds the early hour did not affect the great standard of golf on view.
With lady captain Sheelagh Culverhouse acting as match referee when the trophies were handed out at the end, she confessed that both finalists played near flawless golf, and it was a pity that one had to lose.
It was Williams who took an early lead, and at the 11th hole took what seemed like an unassailable four-hole advantage.
But Retallick is known as someone who never gives up, and playing par golf down the stretch won four out of the next six holes, and with the match all square going down the final hole it was Anna who held her nerve with an up and down at the last for a one-hole victory.
Normally finals are tetchy affairs, this one proved the opposite, with both players playing below their handicaps.
