Thame back to winning ways

Thame United bounced back from last week’s defeat with a stylish 4-1 victory over Wootton Bassett Town.

Having suffered their first defeat since September last time out, manager Mark West made a number of changes to the side with Jon Coverley, Alex Kedzierski and Connor McDonagh all coming in to the starting line-up.

The first clear chance fell United’s way on five minutes when good interplay between Ben Gray and Dan West saw McDonagh through, only for his effort on goal to go narrowly wide from an acute angle.

However, United only had to wait another three minutes to take the lead as McDonagh was again played through and this time he made no mistake to net his first goal for the club.

Opportunities then came and went for West and Matt Hall before the lead was extended on 17 minutes. Ben Gray crossed from the right and McDonagh smashed a first-time half volley into the roof f the net.

United keeper Matt Tapping was called into action for the first time as he kept out a close-range volley, before Thame made it 3-0 at half-time through Ben Gray’s header from a Matt Hall cross.

It was game over three minutes into the second half as McDonagh completed his hat-trick with a well-placed shot from the edge of the box that curled beyond the keeper.

United pushed for more, and another McDonagh effort was saved by the goalkeeper before Ben Gray went close to a fifth on 61 minutes.

However, it was the visitors who had the final say when Ellis Hercules gave away a penalty and Steve Yeardley stepped up to net a late consolation.

Thame, who remain fourth in the Hellenic Premier Division, travel to Reading Town this weekend.

United: Tapping, Coverley, Hall, Mulholland, Hercules, Kedzierski (Lynch), Gray (Jesson), Morris, McDonagh (Hodgkins), West, Ricketts.
