A fire at Tring Athletic’s training ground had to be tackled by five fire crews on Monday but the club will not let it temper the fact they have now purchased their home ground.

The fire is thought to have been started deliberately and Herts Fire and Rescue Service issued a warning to firebugs about the dangers of committing arson on Tuesday.

The blaze failed to put a dampner on the club’s celebrations, though, after they finally secured ownership of their main ground at Pendley Sports Centre on Cow Lane following a 10-year push.

A decade ago Athletic’s ambitions were severely hit when their application for floodlights at their council owned Miswell Lane ground was turned down. Without lights the club were unable to progress any further up the football ladder but undaunted by this set back they were spurred into action and after a lot of hard work and commitment they will now reap the benefits with a bright future ahead for themselves and for football in Tring.

The purchase of the £275,000 ground, which opened in 2003, has now been negotiated thus securing the club’s future and laying down a ‘lasting legacy’.
