FC chairman ‘gutted’ as big match is frozen off
Aylesbury FC chairman Danny Martone
Aylesbury FC chairman Danny Martone paid tribute to the community spirit at his club after the heartbreak of seeing Wednesday night’s big match against MK Dons frozen off.
The Moles were due to meet their illustrious League One neighbours in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup at the Affinity Investments Stadium in Aylesbury but the recent frosty weather put paid to those plans.
FC came close to getting the game on, though, thanks to the dedication of players, staff and volunteers. But it was not to be as one corner of the pitch was unplayable.
“We were gutted!” Martone said.
“A lot of the lads came down and spent all day trying to get the game on.
“HSS (equipment hire) were fantastic and leant us two massive halogen heaters and we had people rolling and forking all day.
“Groundsman Andy Stevens, the under 12 manager Paul Merrison and Barry Newman were there from 9am until 3pm trying their best and we came so close but luck wasn’t on our side and one corner, near the stand, beat us in the end,” he added.
The game has been rescheduled for next Tuesday night and Martone praised MK Dons for their ‘understanding’ and for even offering to switch the game to Stadium:MK should the pitch prove unplayable next week.
“All is not lost, the game will still go ahead next Tuesday,” he said.
“They (MK Dons) have been magnificent I have to say. They have been very understanding and this is probably the last thing Karl Robinson (MK Dons manager) needs at the moment.
“They have offered to switch the game there if we need to and have been really supportive.
“For us it’s a financial thing as well so I would like to get it played here as we should get a crowd of 3-400 easily so we’ve got to do what’s best for us as well,” he added.
