EMMERSON Boyce starred as Wigan Athletic defied all the odds and expert opinion to pull off their second shock in as many games with victory over Arsenal on Monday night.
Aylesbury-born Boyce, a former Quarrendon School pupil, was a rock in defence for the Latics, who looked destined for relegation just a matter of weeks ago.
But, surprise victories over Manchester United and now Arsenal have propelled them out of the relegation zone with just a few weeks of the season remaining.
Prior to Wigan’s amazing win over Manchester United, they were also desperately unlucky not to beat Chelsea, where a much-publicised blunder from the officials saw a Wigan goal unfairly chalked off.
Elsewhere, Boyce’s cousin and fellow professional footballer Matt Phillips has been the subject of yet more transfer speculation.
While his club Blackpool could still secure a play-off place and promotion back to the Premier League, Phillips has been offered another route back to the big time via Reading, who are all but over the line.
A report in Tuesday’s Daily Mail claims that the Berkshire side have been running the rule over the Scotland star.
