Classy Aylesbury give Wallingford a walloping

Aylesbury v Wallingford, Played at Weston Turville

Aylesbury vindicated boss Dave Larham’s words of positivity when they thrashed visiting Wallingford at Ostler’s Field on Saturday.

The Ay’s were looking to make amends after their bizarre loss to Alchester last week, after which the boss backed his side to bounce back quickly.

And they did exactly as Larham was able to field a full strength side for the first time this season.

The Magenta and Blacks were targeting a five-point league win to christen their new gold change strip but things started badly when the first opportunity fell to the visitors from the kick when they had the chance to put points on the board from a penalty.

The kick went wide leaving the scores level and it was the gentle reminder Ay’s needed as the back row of Kriss Hardman, Harry Jackman and Jordan Stanmore were dominating the loose.

Big Jim Dodds drove off the back of a driving maul to crash over for his first try (5-0) and Ays did not rest on their laurels as it only took two more minutes for them to increase the lead through Mike Durose under the posts and Woodfall converted (12-0).

The hosts’ young front row were having a great game in the loose covering a lot of ground and running the ball at Wallingford and supporting the backs.

Man of the match Sam Chappell was having a fine day as was Hugh Flanagan in the second row. The next score came when Dodds was on hand at the end of a flowing move to run the ball in for a try out wide but Woodfall was unable to convert this time (17-0).

The best move of the day followed as the ball made its way to speedster Liam D’Almeida who ran in a try under the posts.

Woodfall converted to make it 24-0 at half-time and with the bonus point already in the bag.

Coach Larham was understandably pleased with his team but ever the taskmaster asked for more effort and more of the same in the second half. Wallingford improved in the second half as well, though, restricting Aylesbury to just two more tries from Scott McKenzie – converted – (31-0) and Jonny Burgess – converted – to seal a comfortable win with 38 points and none against.
