Chinnor boss confident they can mix it with the big boys despite defeat

Chinnor’s boss said he was proud of his side despite watching them come unstuck after a late flurry of tries in a 32-9 defeat at league leaders Henley Hawks.
Jason Bowers saw his black-and-whites battle hard to stay in contention but said at times they did not get the ‘rub of the green’.
He said: “We stayed with them for a good 70 minutes or so. We could have potentially gone in at half-time in a better position.”
With Chinnor putting in a huge shift in defence, a yellow card for prop Andy Berry and a late score, when the clock showed 44 minutes, sent the Hawks into the break 8-6 up.
Bowers added: “We deserved a bit more from certain aspects of the game but then we needed to do a bit more in our own aspects.”
Eventually the Hawks began to seize control in the derby and another controversial score followed when winger Richard Briggs touched down.
Prior to the try, Tom Whelan was adjudged to have brought the scrum down when it was his opposite number who dropped his shoulder.
However, Bowers refused to get caught up in too many of the decisions as Henley ran over three more tries late on.
“They are a very, very good team. They fully deserved the win. But we proved we can compete with the best teams in this league.
“They put their foot down in the last five minutes, really.
“We look forward to the return fixture in March now. There is no one who is worrying us too much.”
Chinnor now sit in seventh in SSE National League 2 South and will host Southend (13) on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).
