Thame swimmers' joy at top Oxford gala
SWIMMERS from the Thame squad of Wycombe District Swimming Club experienced unparalleled success at the latest Grade 3 gala hosted by the City of Oxford Swimming Club last Saturday.
From 80 swims overall, the medal tally totalled an impressive 11 gold, 4 silver and 8 bronze plus another 22 finalists, namely fourth and fifth places. Two swimmers also received speeding tickets which guarantees promotion to Grade 2 galas in future. In addition, there were 46 personal best times posted, demonstrating the continuing improvement of the club over the past year.
WDSC encompasses competitive swimming squads in High Wycombe, Princes Risborough and Thame, with the latter two representing the club at this Oxford gala.
The swimmers, who range in age from 9 to 17, have been developed intensively over the past 18 months at both Soll Leisure Centre and Risborough Springs.
Many of the children also swim competitively for Lord Williams's School, benefiting directly from regular training at WDSC. The thriller event of the gala came in the last heat of the 50 metre freestyle, which was also the final race of the day.
Two Wycombe swimmers, Ana Martinez-Vega and Lydia Briars, raced each other to win gold and silver respectively, both finishing well ahead of the field.
Coach David Jones said: "This is clearly the best competitive performance by our swimmers to date and demonstrates that all the hard work is beginning to pay off."
If you are interested in swimming competitively then please go along to a free trial session at Soll Leisure Centre, Thame at either 7pm on Fridays or 6pm on Sundays.
